Empty it completely

Remove food, ice trays, bins, magnets, and anything stored on top. Loose glass shelves should come out or be secured so they cannot shift while the refrigerator is tilted.

Defrost and control the water

Unplug the refrigerator early enough for frost to melt. A shallow tray and towels help protect the floor. If the refrigerator has an ice maker, close the supply valve and have the water line disconnected and capped.

Plan the route

Measure the refrigerator and every doorway on the way out. Clear rugs, shoes, pet gates, and small furniture. Tell the pickup team about steps, a narrow turn, or a gate before the appointment.

Leave the sealed system alone

Refrigerators contain refrigerant and oil. Do not cut tubing or try to vent the unit. EPA rules assign refrigerant-recovery duties to qualified parties in the disposal chain.
