Keep the refrigerant sealed
Window air conditioners contain refrigerant in a closed system. Do not cut the tubing, puncture the case, or try to drain the refrigerant yourself.
Remove the unit safely
Unplug the air conditioner, remove screws and brackets, and use a helper. The outdoor side can hold water and is heavier than it looks. Protect the sill and close the opening after removal.
Let an approved facility handle the next step
EPA guidance explains that refrigerant must be recovered before final disposal. Collection programs and disposal facilities may require proof that recovery was completed.
Prepare for pickup
Drain ordinary condensation, coil the power cord, and keep brackets together. Tell the pickup team whether the unit is already out of the window or still installed.
